From the Dorze highlands to the colorful markets of Key Afer and Jinka, this tour is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience one of Africa’s most culturally diverse regions.
Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Addis Ababa
Meet and greet at Bole International Airport.
Hotel transfer and brief orientation.
City tour including the National Museum (home of Lucy), Holy Trinity Cathedral, and panoramic view from Entoto Hills.
Overnight in Addis Ababa.
Day 2: Addis Ababa – Hawassa
Drive south through the Rift Valley.
Stop at Lake Ziway to see aquatic birds and hippos.
Continue to Hawassa and enjoy sunset at Lake Hawassa.
Optional fish market visit in the evening.
Overnight in Hawassa.
Day 3: Hawassa – Arba Minch
Morning visit to the bustling fish market at Lake Hawassa.
Drive to Arba Minch via Sodo.
En route visit the Dorze village, known for their unique beehive-shaped huts, weaving traditions, and enset (false banana) cultivation.
Overnight in Arba Minch.
Day 4: Arba Minch
Morning boat trip on Lake Chamo to view crocodiles, hippos, and birdlife at the “Crocodile Market”.
Visit the 40 Springs in Nechisar National Park.
Cultural evening experience with Dorze or Gamo music and dance (optional).
Overnight in Arba Minch.
Day 5: Arba Minch – Konso – Jinka
Depart for Jinka with a stop in Konso, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Visit Konso cultural village, terraced farming systems, and the Waka grave markers.
Continue to Jinka through beautiful highland scenery.
Overnight in Jinka.
Day 6: Jinka – Mago National Park – Mursi Village – Jinka
Early morning drive to Mago National Park.
Visit the Mursi tribe, known for their unique lip plates and body scarification traditions.
Return to Jinka for an afternoon visit to the South Omo Research Center or Jinka market (if on market day).
Overnight in Jinka.
Day 7: Jinka – Key Afer – Turmi
Visit the colorful Key Afer market (Thursdays only), where you can see the Ari, Bena, and Tsemay tribes.
Continue to Turmi, home of the Hamer people.
Optional cultural experience or evening dance ceremony (Evangadi).
Overnight in Turmi.
Day 8: Turmi – Omorate – Turmi
Excursion to Omorate to visit the Dassanech tribe across the Omo River.
Cross the river in a traditional wooden canoe.
Return to Turmi for relaxation or interaction with the Hamer people.
Overnight in Turmi.
Day 9: Turmi – Arba Minch
Drive back to Arba Minch via Konso or a different scenic route.
Optional stops for photos and cultural experiences.
Overnight in Arba Minch.
Day 10: Arba Minch – Addis Ababa – Departure
Morning flight or drive back to Addis Ababa.
Optional shopping and farewell dinner with traditional music and dance at a cultural restaurant.
Transfer to airport for international departure or continue your stay in Ethiopia.
