Known for its alpine meadows, mysterious cloud forests, and the vast Sanetti Plateau, Bale is a haven for trekkers and nature lovers. This journey takes you deep into one of Ethiopia’s richest ecological zones—home to endemic wildlife like the Ethiopian wolf, Mountain Nyala, and exotic bird species. Whether you’re camping beneath starry skies or crossing misty ridges, this short yet powerful trek offers an unforgettable wilderness experience.
Itinerary
Day 1: Drive from Addis Ababa – Dinsho (Bale Mountains Headquarters)
Early morning departure from Addis Ababa (approx. 7–8 hours’ drive).
Scenic route via Shashamene and Dodola with stops for refreshments and photos.
Afternoon arrival at Dinsho Park HQ.
Short acclimatization hike around the Harenna Forest and Gaysay grasslands to spot Mountain Nyala, Bohor reedbuck, warthogs, and birds.
Set up camp or lodge overnight in Dinsho.
Day 2: Trek from Dinsho to Sodota (Approx. 20 km / 6–7 hrs)
Begin the trek through juniper woodlands and Afro-alpine meadows.
Hike alongside the Web River, passing through open grasslands and patches of Hagenia trees.
Possible sightings of Ethiopian wolves, bushbucks, and giant mole rats.
Picnic lunch along the trail.
Arrive at Sodota Campsite, perched in a scenic valley surrounded by cliffs and wildlife.
Overnight camping at Sodota.
Day 3: Trek from Sodota to Wasema (Approx. 18 km / 6–7 hrs)
Continue through high-altitude meadows with sweeping mountain views.
Cross streams and admire wildflowers and birds like the Blue-winged goose and Wattled ibis.
Picnic lunch en route.
Ascend gradually to Wasema Campsite, located at the base of Mount Wasema.
Overnight camping at Wasema.
Day 4: Wasema – Sanetti Plateau – Drive to Addis Ababa (via Goba or Robe)
Early morning trek up to the Sanetti Plateau (over 4,000 meters).
Explore this magical alpine world, home to the Ethiopian wolf, endemic birds, and breathtaking panoramas.
Meet your vehicle on the plateau and drive across the “roof of Africa” toward Goba or Robe.
Return journey to Addis Ababa (or overnight in Goba if preferred).
End of tour.
